“Survivor” Is Relative To Whom?

“One can choose to go back toward safety or forward toward growth.  Growth must be chosen again and again; fear must be overcome again and again.” Abraham Maslow (1908 – 1970)

Many people I know, some family members, close friends and I, all have been sexually abused  in the homes, by people and countries we and our families trust.  The more I listen and watch all of us share and carry the scars and not the abusers.  I question what it means to be a “survivor” after being violated. It saddens me to see our elected representatives fighting over who the violence against women laws should protect.  Too often, you do find that people who abuse others were or currently being abused.  This goes for women, children and men. The unfair laws, lack of family support, social circle, friends and one’s refusal to get help and break their silent continue to create a society where violence is acceptable.
